really cruisin’ now

Melina’s been practicing her two-wheeling skills whenever we get the chance, and today we biked at the park around the corner with Lily. After just five or six times out on her bike sans training wheels, she definitely has the swing of it!

I credit her year and a half on a balance bike (and Melina’s own eagerness) for the smooth transition. Up next: starting without Mommy’s help.

no training wheels!

Melina got her first two-wheel pedal bike last month with money Joey made by selling a bunch of his old vinyl records to Amoeba. She spent a few weeks with training wheels, just to get used to pedaling again (after over a year on a balance bike), not to mention the whole idea of pedaling backwards to brake.

Yesterday we took off the training wheels and lowered the seat. Today she figured out how to stop without crashing. Look at her go!

Nalani decided it would be fun to jump in front of her sister’s bike path. Since Mina’s just starting out, we thought it best to pull her to the side.

Nalani loves books. Her new thing is to act out the book as it’s read to her.

Nalani loves to follow the big kids around and join in wherever she can. She and buddy Maya (Emma’s li’l sis, just three weeks older) can hold their own at just about any playground we head to for play group, and have both become masters of the big kid slide at one favorite park.

Nalani loves to dance. She has four moves: flapping her arms around, stomping her feet, attempting a twirl (only when copying sis), and bopping up and down on her knees like she’s doing here. So far she only does one move per dance, but I’m sure the combo act is coming soon.

I taught her to scoot down our family room steps on Monday and she’s been practicing all week. I’m a proud mama.

Or wading pool, as the case was this afternoon at a fun-loving BBQ with the Schultzes. We all had a great time, especially the posse of four-year-old girls!

17 steps, that counts as walking!

Nalani had fun practicing her walking at playgroup today. This video shows a turn and 17 full steps in a row. She did even more – including quick balance recoveries – but I didn’t catch it on video. She sometimes still walks sideways (just like when she cruises), which I love.

In any case, she’s off!

Nalani’s definitely taken more steps in a row than in this video, but not frequently. We figure she needs a batchi (Melina’s name for small lovey blanky) in her mouth to help her balance. From May 2, and yes, it’s sideways.
