Our Little Penguin

Melina With Super Suli

Today made me feel like I truly can become a kid all over again. Or, for the first time since grade school, enjoy Halloween in the purest, sugar- and andrenaline-drenched way possible. After years of partying in the Castro, carousing with friends, or hiding out at home (I admit it, but just a couple times), I looked forward to filling Melina’s pumpkin with what one SF Chronicle food columnist called “low-rent candy,” the kind I crave just once a year.

Trick Or Treat

We started the day walking with Kai in his preschool’s costume parade around the neighborhood (check out Meli taking in the scene over daddy’s shoulder) then caught up with some yoga mom and baby friends at Habitot’s baby and tot party in downtown Berkeley (yes, that’s my pinguino with Super Suli).

Butterfingers

We topped off the evening trick-or-treating with Kai, his mom, and her boyfriend, plus the boyfriend’s son and ex-wife – it was a true blended family affair – on Mariposa Street in North Berkeley. The folks who live on this street go gang busters with decorations and buckets full of candy. We even had to wait in line at a few houses. Melina got a kick out of all the action, but lucky for us went down without a fuss as soon as we got home. I’m guessing Kai’s on a sugar high at his mom’s place right now.

Note for next year? I need a costume.
